A term sometimes used to denote the verbal or semiotic environment of certain semiotic processes or practices, as opposed to the extraverbal (extrasemiotic) environment of the context. The latter is sometimes called a situational environment.
Here is a simple example – this article on co-text occurs in the co-text of this semiotics glossary. The article is woven into a larger text. On the other hand, both the article and the whole semiotics glossary are part of a world made by much more than words. We call this world, especially the signs of it, to which the messages in this book refer, an extraverbal environment.
