Synonymous with awareness is also the ability of an organism to respond to or at least respond to intra- or extra somatic phenomena and objects.
According to Charles S. Peirce, “every time we think, we present to our consciousness some feeling, image, concept, or another image that serves as a sign” (CP 5.328).
This suggests that consciousness is woven of signs.
Here, as in many other contexts, we see that the value of a truly general theory of signs lies in the fact that it invites us to reinterpret such topics as consciousness, knowledge, and subjectivity. Moreover, it provides us with the resources for such an interpretation.
