In Marxist discourse, “ideology” is a term usually meaning “wrong consciousness,” or more generally, a system of ideas in the service of a group.
In this sense, we could speak (as Marx does) of a revolutionary ideology, that is, of a system of ideas in the service of those who will take power from the hands of an established status quo.
In addition to considering ideology as a system of ideas that arose on the maintenance, growth, usurpation, etc. of power, it is also useful to view the whole discourse as ideological or involving an ideological dimension.
The writings of Michel Foucault and feminist authors such as Luce Irigaray exploit the pervasive yet elusive presence of this dimension.
