A clear message of end justifies the means through Machiavelli’s work, The Prince, which created a significant shift in political philosophy and moral philosophy and well. The notion meant that actions should be judged by the consequences rather than intentions. Consequently, Renaissance humanism blurred the lines between moral conduct as it used to be controlled by religious doctrines and refuted to all claims of political philosophy that pointed towards an ideal society. A term coined for this ideology – Consequentialism – became a widely accepted approach in moral philosophy well into the years through Renaissance into the Age of Reason inspiring utilitarianism of the late 18-19th century. Likewise, it was not until the works of Immanuel Kant that the focus shifted from consequences to intentions as a root of moral judgment.
