In older age, we face new psychological challenges. These can be seen as affecting our lifelong psychological growth. This period of life can also be associated with negative stereotypes about physical and intellectual decline. However, much like any other developmental stage, this one also offers both positive and negative potentials.
After retirement from a career and raising children, this can be a good time to pursue new interests and do things you haven’t done before. On the downside, however, it is often the case that your body slows down, and you start to get older. You might lose your friends and partners, and you have less opportunity to enjoy an active social life. For most people, this is also a time for self-reflection and thinking about what they have achieved in their lifetime so far. This brings up the question of whether they have lived up to their ideals and values. If they feel they have not, then they may experience regret or sadness. On the positive side, however, if they feel they have succeeded, they may feel satisfied and proud.
