The deceiving demon

Descartes’ method of doubt was invented to help him prove his ideas were true. He said that you should try to imagine that your mind is being deceived by an evil demon. All beliefs will then start to seem false because the demon can only deceive you if you already had them. So you should investigate whether any of those beliefs still seem like they might be true. Only when you found out that none of them seemed to be true, you can be sure that you actually exist. This is similar to the idea behind the famous “Flying Man” thought experiment. If a man finds himself in a room full of mirrors, he may see himself walking around, but if the mirrors are broken, he won’t be able to prove that he exists. Similarly, if the whole of our universe is just a creation of a computer program, it doesn’t matter if we are looking at a real reflection in a mirror or a fake one. We wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. But since we a skeptical and aware of these phenomena we can only be sure that we exist.
