3. 1. Types of Signs According to the Level of Complexity

3. Types of Signs

In semiotics, there are numerous ways for signs to be categorized. One of these ways is to categorize them according to their level of complexity. This categorization helps in understanding the varying degrees of interpretative depth required for different signs.

Bearing in mind that none of the categories is  entirely accepted by the intellectuals, the following are the types of signs according to the level of complexity:

3.1.1. Simple Signs (Basic Signs)

Elementary signs are such signs that can’t be analyzed (nor divided) into smaller autonomous entities. These signs could be both linguistic and non-linguistic.

For example, such signs are the icons. They have a low complexity as the definition of an icon sign is a sign that resembles the signified.

3.1.2. Complex

Complex signs are signs that could be divided and analyzed. Some semioticians refer to the complex signs as “supersigns”.  Smaller constituent elements make these signs.

Complex signs could be perceived as:

3.1.2.1 Homogenеous

Homogenеous signs are made by uniform elements of a single sign language.

3.1.2.2. Heterogeneous

Heterogeneous signs are signs that are built by elements of different sign languages.
