Homo Loquens, like Homo Sapiens, is one of the many ways that we, humans, call ourselves. While Homo Sapiens is a widespread term, that means wise man, the Homo Loquens is a term that is arguably far less recognized among society.
The term, again from Latin, stands for speaking man.
Still, both homo loquens and homo sapiens are just two of the many ways that we call ourselves. These names both help us define ourselves and simultaneously define us, and puts our kind in a category, which will best help the researcher/writer/etc. to put forward their idea. Of course, the already mentioned Homo Sapiens is the most common, and most widely recognized. Still, there are others, like Homo Faber (Man the Maker) or Homo Habilis (handy man), Homo Prometheus (Man using fire), Homo Ridens (Laughing Man), Homo Ludens (Man the Player), Homo Politicus (Man the Politic).
And Ernst Cassirer proposes animal symbolicum.
