Ostranenie is a word of Russian origin, used by Viktor Shklovsky as well as by other Russian formalists in order to identify the core function of poetry, among other art forms.
Ostranenie means to “do something strange” and Shklovsky used it because he believed that the poetic usage of language was meant to introduce us to both us and our worlds so that we can see it in a new light.
