Ratio is the Latin word for reason or rationality.
As the term “intelligent animal” suggests, the human race is defined as possessing rationality or reason. In addition, Ratio is used as one of the divine names (one of the names by which God is characterized).
It would be difficult to exaggerate the status and importance given to reason in the dominant tradition of Western thought and especially philosophy.
However, this state of affairs has been questioned in various historical periods, perhaps most intensely and from the most varied points of view in modern times.
Deconstructivism and feminism are the two influential currents that challenge the traditional place and concepts of reason.
