Semiotics is the study or doctrine of signs, sometimes presented as the science of signs; the systematic study of the nature, essence, and types of signs, especially undertaken in one’s own conscious way.
The study of signs has a long, rich and interesting history. As a self-conscious and different branch of research, it represents a modern approach that stems from two independent research traditions.
One can be traced back to Charles S. Peirce, an American philosopher and creator of pragmatism; the other to Ferdinand de Saussure, a Swiss linguist who is widely recognized as the founder of modern linguistics and one of the great inspirers of structuralism.
