Political philosophers – historically – have believed in the notion of an ‘ideal state’. Governments were often judged by how they act, not what they say. Noam Chomsky had been attracted to left-wing and anarchist philosophies since his earliest exposure to politics – after his notable works in linguistics and moral philosophy. As a moral philosopher, he believed that if you apply the same standards of morality towards yourself as you do towards others, then you can criticize your own government as well as any other government. He stated that governments should be held accountable for their actions, regardless of who is in charge. A state does not always speak in ethical terms, and even when they do, they still behave unethically sometimes. Chomsky explained that we remain passive to our governments and inherently consider them more ethical than others. However, he proposed that any government can be criticized for its actions, and we should look at every country equally as well as consider how much autonomy a government must hold to exert its power.
