Individuals who consider the acts of their governments immoral should break those laws and disobey the orders of their states. Henry Thoreau was a transcendentalist who refused to pay taxes that supported slavery and the Mexican wars. He also opposed the use of force to put down citizens’ peaceful protests and demonstrations. Civil disobedience is an act of passive resistance used to challenge unjust laws or policies. A non-violent protest is a form of civil disobedience. It involves refusing to obey an unjust law or policy until better conditions exist. A person who engages in nonviolent protest is called a conscientious objector. Thoreau’s idea of civil disobedience was used by Gandhi to fight for Indian independence. It was also used by Martin Luther King to fight for civil rights in the U.S.
