A major concern for left-wing political philosophers from Frankfurt School has been the incessant increase and success of capitalism in society, contrary to Marx’s prediction of the inevitable failure. After the failure of Soviet socialism in the east, only a small number of states continued to follow socialism and communism – while even China developed its own mixed economy. Marxist thinkers found themselves defeated and powerless. However, Slavoj Zizek used this as a stance for resistance and retorted that the conception of an ideal state without putting it into practice is destructive and philosophers should stop interpreting the world and focus more on changing it. According to Zizek, the actual failure of left-wing is to passively accept and give up on overthrowing capitalism. Instead, he proposed, philosophers must revisit the revolutionary idea of socialism in light of events.
