Mental health disorders can be seen as extreme forms of emotional states rather than illnesses in themselves. They are also often viewed as undesirable, due to the stigma surrounding them. Therefore, we may consider happiness to be a mental illness, since it does not conform to societal expectations. In order to remove any stigma surrounding mental health issues, Richard Bentall proposed that happiness be included within the classification system for mental disorders.
Bentall believed that happiness was, “Statistically abnormal, consists of an isolated cluster of symptoms is linked to a whole host of cognitive impairments and probably reflects the abnormal function of the central nervous system.” We have no logical reason to treat it because it is pleasant instead of distressing and we value it positively. On a more important note, Bentall suggested that we should examine our current classification of psychiatric disorders to see if they come from prejudice.
