From its inception in the 14th century, the Renaissance was akin to medieval Greek and European culture being reborn after more than a thousand years of being controlled by the Church and Papal authorities. While some thinkers delved into understanding the universe like Galileo, others were keener on understanding human anatomy like Leonardo da Vinci. In its prime, the Renaissance was truly a cultural and artistic movement however its emphasis on humanism inspired political thought and was utilized in the foundation of the republics such as Florence and Venice. Indeed, though the word Renaissance is of more recent coinage, the fundamental idea of that period as one of renewal and reawakening is humanistic in origin. But humanism sought its own philosophical bases in far earlier times and, moreover, continued to exert some of its power long after the end of the Renaissance. Since during the period what saw more advancement wasn’t philosophy but science.
