Neuroscience — the study of the structure and function of the nervous system — emerged as a separate discipline at about the same time as psychology became a recognized science. At the same time, developments in the physical sciences (including physics) and biology led to new ways of understanding how the mind works. These insights were then applied to problems of mental health and psychopathology. Hence, this gave a rise to a new branch in the world of psychology known as biopsychology – biological psychology.
Also known as psychological neuroscience, physiological psychology, and psychobiology, this approach examines the relationship between the physical functioning of the brain and the mind. Advances in neurophysiology have enabled scientists to better understand how the brain works and how the body affects the mind. Brain imaging shows us how thoughts and emotions work inside the brain and can help improve treatments for mental health disorders.
